I think part of King of the Hill’s brilliance was that it was nuanced. A lot of comedy shows resort to kind of one-dimensional tropes to get a character across, and make a black and white sort of thing where a character is either almost always right or almost always wrong.

The thing about the Hill family is that they’re good people, but flawed people. Hank is on the whole meant to be the sensible smart patriarch, but he’s also prone to being backwards in his ways, or too prideful to discuss the problems he suffered. Cotton as a character could easily be simply for laughs, but the effect his behavior had on Hank as a parent isn’t left out of the picture, which adds just that much more to the characterization. Bobby presents a challenge to Hank, and while Hank doesn’t always understand his son, he more often than not tries to step up to be better than Cotton, and support his kid. He realizes that they’re never going to be 100% on the same wavelength, but he loves his kid all the same.

Peggy is annoying and full of herself, but you still have plenty of moments where you find her lovable or funny (well, I do, anyway). The episode with Randy Travis can make even the biggest Peggy hater feel bad for her. That’s just got writing.

KOTH blends reality in with its comedy, and I think that really sets it apart from its colleagues. While there’s nothing wrong with straightforward gags, it’s something refreshing to see a show that has room to be both realistic and take humor from that.

Anyway the point of this post is put King of the Hill back on netflix.

There’s a whole episode where Hank thinks he’s racist, but it turns out he just hates repair men or some shit like that.
