lesbianzoidberg:

all the time i have to deal with the aftermath of people’s “good intentions” when it comes to wildlife, which means trying to fix whatever they fucked up bc they got their info off of google instead of the actual training i received from actual government-licensed rehabbers with decades of experience. all the time we get animals that were fed cow’s milk, pet food, cooked vegetables, all kinds of weird fucking shit bc “the internet said i should do it.” you may think it’s fine for a short-term solution but bad nutrition can have lasting negative effects on wild animals. it can make them sick enough to kill them, or change their physiology so much that they will never be able to survive in the wild.

we have a white-winged dove right now that was fed dog food for the first three months of its life, then given to us bc the owners “didn’t like him landing on [their] heads all the time” (which is probably something they trained him to do). because he got the wrong nutrition his beak is permanently deformed (bc it did not have the right nutrients & minerals to develop correctly) & he is completely unable to eat on his own. he can’t even pick up seeds. so he will have to be gavage (tube) fed for the rest of his life. he cannot survive in the wild because he can’t eat. not only that but he is 100% imprinted on humans & does not have the proper fear response that would keep him safe in the wild. the rescue is still trying to decide if he should be kept as an education animal (which would use up our limited resources) or euthanized. all because someone thought having a dove as a pet would be cute, then got tired of it when it was no longer entertaining to them. us rehabbers are the ones who have to pick up the pieces, but it is the animals that suffer when you try to play the hero. if you find an injured animal just do the right thing & call your nearest licensed rehabber ffs.

Important words from someone who has personal experience with the results of folk trying to save wildlife themselves.
